Mental Health Intake Assessment coordinator

About the Role
  • Act as the BMHU Bed Manager and is responsible to facilitate admission processes for patients referred for admission to BMHU from the Kimberley and Pilbara regions. Responsible for providing timely and specialised clinical mental health nursing consultancy service to Emergency Department (ED) and other clinical staff of Broome Hospital.
  • Responsible to triage and conduct mental health assessments of patients presenting to ED and who may be considered at risk or requiring specialised acute mental health assessment.
  • Provides assistance and information to carers.
  • Is a conduit and link in liaising with relevant others in the hospital, BMHU and community mental health services.
Experience & Skills
  • Eligible for registration in the category of Registered Nurse by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
  • Demonstrated advanced skills in the nursing management of complex psychiatric presentations, risk assessment, crisis intervention and management of aggression in a clinical setting.
  • Demonstrated advanced written, verbal and interpersonal communication, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve logistical problems that involve competing priorities.
  • A working knowledge of computers and information systems relevant to the position/role.
  • Current knowledge of legislative obligations for the Mental Health Act (2014).
  • Working knowledge of providing clinical care within the recovery framework principles.
  • Ability to work on-call on weekends as required.
  • Current C class Drivers Licence
What's on Offer
  • WACHS will pay up to $500 each way to fly a person here or if they drive up from Perth that should cover their fuel. Accommodation will be provided at a cost of $251 per week plus utilities of $17.40, Broome is small but the accommodation will not necessarily be on the hospital doorstep. If the person decides to drive up they will definitely benefit from having a vehicle here.

The Kimberley is located in the north-west region of Western Australia. It covers an area of 421,451 square kilometres, an area three times the size of England, but is home to only 35,748 people. A relatively high proportion of the residents are Aboriginal Australians. The population swells seasonally with an influx of tourists and a mobile working population.

The major towns of the Kimberley include Broome and Derby on the west coast, with Kununurra and Wyndham in the east. Broome enjoys a laid-back tropical ambience whilst the ranges of the East Kimberley showcase the awe-inspiring grandeur and beauty that nature has created. Travels across the Kimberley will yield tropical beaches, rugged ranges, spectacular gorges, waterfalls, caves, pockets of lush rainforest and an astounding variety of wildlife.

The region has a thriving economy, based on both tourism and the richness of its natural resources. It enjoys regular commercial flights from Perth and interstate capital cities. The Kimberley has a tropical summer and dry winter and this diverse climate changes the landscape from season to season.

There are approximately 70 general practitioners including GP registrars in the region, nine in private practice, 33 in Aboriginal Medical Services, two in the Royal Flying Doctor Service and 26 hospital based general practitioners.
