Through the Commonwealth-funded Visiting Optometrists Scheme (VOS), Lions Outback Vision (LOV) continues to deliver high-quality eye care to some of the most remote communities in the Kimberley, Midwest and Pilbara regions, bridging the gap in access to essential vision services.
During one visit to Halls Creek, optometrist Margie O’Neill saw 50 patients in just a few days, supported by an exceptionally well-organised local team. The addition of a new Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) machine allowed for advanced imaging on-site, preventing unnecessary travel to Kununurra for at least 7–10 patients.
“It really is making a difference,” she wrote, acknowledging the critical support from local partners in making the clinics run smoothly and effectively.
In Roebourne, optometrist Michelle Beach adapted the service model to improve access for older patients.
Instead of asking elderly residents of the Yaandina Aged Care Centre to travel to the main clinic, the team delivered care directly at the facility. The change was welcomed by residents and staff alike, and the team now plans to make these clinics a regular part of their Roebourne visits.
