When Katie Nguyen relocated from Sydney to Geraldton in early 2024 with her husband, who was commencing his rural Public Health training, she knew it would take some time to find her feet again professionally.
With a background in learning and development, Katie was on extended parental leave caring for her young daughter and looking for the right opportunity to reconnect with her career.
Through Rural Health West’s Partner Education Grant, Katie was able to undertake a two-day short course in Articulate 360 – a specialist tool for online training design. “It was a great opportunity to refresh my skills and build confidence to return to work,” she says. “Without the grant, I likely would have considered the course out of budget.”
The impact was almost immediate.
“Shortly after completing the course, I was offered work in a not-for-profit health education organisation, designing accessible training for people living in the regions. I’ve been able to apply the new skills I gained straight away.”
Katie now encourages other partners of rural health professionals to apply.
“You have nothing to lose, and it could genuinely boost your career or passion project. Programs like this are so important for making education more accessible, no matter where you live.”
