This webinar will provide an important update on recent developments relating to firearms health assessment in Western Australia, with a specific focus on the resulting obligations of health practitioners.

As expectations for firearm health assessments continue to change in WA, understanding their practical application is becoming increasingly important for medical practitioners and patients. The webinar will examine these applications and explore the potential impacts they may have in various cases and scenarios common in rural and remote areas.  By providing clarity on current expectations and future directions, this session aims to support informed decision-making and enhance consistency in practice among rural and remote GPs.

This webinar is hosted by Dr Richard Taylor and Dr Mariam Bahemia. Richard Taylor is a rural GP based in Geraldton. He has been representing the RACGP on the Health Advisory Working Group for Firearms Health Assessments. Mariam is a GP in Perth. She is an RACGP WA Council member and a past Deputy Chair of the RACGP WA. Mariam has been an active participant and advocate for GPs and their patients as part of the Health Advisory Working Group on Firearms Health Assessments since February 2023.

What you will hear in this webinar:

  • The details of the firearm application process, including the self-assessment questionnaire and the Firearm  Authority Health Assessment
  • A walkthrough of potential cases rural and remote GPs may face and how to navigate their difficulty.
  • Lessons from the host’s own experience and advice for future practice
